The Varsity

46-48 Terrace Road - (01970) 615234

Very definitely a typical chain-bar with scrubbed-wood floors, lots of space, a small gallery level and big picture windows.

By day, this is a good place for a relaxing drink or a spot of people-watching, with its windows overlooking Terrace Road. It's also a good choice for food due to the fairly large range of keenly-priced food.

In the evenings, this is very much a hotspot for students and the similarly-minded. Fridays, Saturdays and the pound party night all draw big crowds that fill the place to bursting.

Buying a 'V Card' from the bar is a must to bring the prices down - as they're actually fairly steep for Aber.

  • "Used to love coming here for a meal with my friends until recently, where all I had to send my food back 3 times because it wasn't what I asked for and the service was terrible." - Anon [Oct 2007]
  • "Great place to meet friends for food and drink. £1 party on Tuesdays, 2-for-1 on Wednesdays are always a good night out. Try it for yourself - you wont be disappointed." - Fiona Lee [Oct 2007]
  • "V Card is a must, making the drinks price really competitive. Good food. My friends and I practically live there." - Lisa Wall [Mar 2007]
  • "Knew it when it was the White Horse and a cracking pub. Was totally gutted when they created this monstrosity. Awful, awful, awful." - Pub Goer [Nov 2006]
  • "It's a trendy pub, and is always busy. Popular with locals and students. The food is very good quality. And you just need to know which drinks are the best value ones. The staff are good fun and are always pleasant! Good for nights out." - Joanne [Oct 2006]
  • "Nice place, just too expensive - it's almost £3 for 1 pint. Not a good place if you're looking for cheap drinks, and the music ain't all that." - Charlie, London [Oct 2006]
  • "Very rude staff, some of them were out harrasing students on campus, trying to stick stickers on them! One tried it on me with him legging it as he saw the look on my face and me throwing it back at him after tearing it off me." - Luke [Sep 2006]
  • "Dump. Rubbish food, all microwaved, rude staff, extortionate prices. Miss it." - Kate Sedgely [Jun 2006]
  • "We don't like this place that much. Maybe it's because we never seem to get there at the right time for the dirt cheap drinks. Outside the special promotions and even with a V Card, the drinks aren't cheap, nor are they anything special. Great for big groups, but for 2-3 of you it's not up to much, and really noisy." - Dean & Pai, Aberystwyth [May 2006]
  • "Rubbish. Again, should I mention that it is rubbish? They only seem to own one CD that they play constantly." - Snakebite Betty [Apr 2006]
  • "Unless you are a student, very drunk or both best to avoid this student vomitarium." - Fat Bob [Jan 2005]
  • "This is a quality night out. You cant complain at 1 a sambuca. If you want to have fun stop off here spend 5 on sambuca and the night will become great. A good stop before you hit the other pubs and clubs." - Bertram, UWA
  • "Smashing place, visited all 3 days we were there. Enjoyed the Varsity discount card. Nice and smart though." - Ste Dodd, Southport
  • "Comprehensive barfood menu, very tasty and good value for money." - Brian Barr
  • "Great breakfasts, good offers. Some girls I know come here 9 times a week, at least!" - Beanie
