Aberaeron
Some 16 miles south along the coast lies the small town of Aberaeron. The town once built ships and was a trading port. Now, with its colourful Georgian houses and quiet harbour, it has become a popular holiday resort. A sea aquarium gives an insight into the marine life of Cardigan Bay.
- From Aberystwyth take the A487 south, or the 550 bus service.

Borth and Ynyslas
Borth, a village resort situated seven miles to the north of Aberystwyth boasts three miles of clean, sandy beaches. Particularly popular are the Ynyslas sand dunes along the side of the Dovey Estuary, with the great view across the water and large expanses of sand. A great place for kids is the Borth Animalarium with its collection of animals and birds. (Tel. 01970 871224)

Centre for Alternative Technology
One of the Wales Tourist Board's 'Star Attractions', CAT claims to be "a village of the future." Housed in an old slate quarry, attractions include numerous interesting displays on renewable energy sources, organic gardens and a water-powered cliff railway.

3 miles north of Machynlleth on the A487 and also served by Arriva bus route 32 (Aberystwyth-Dolgellau) with a stop around 300 yards from the centre.

Llywernog Silver Lead Mines
For over one hundred years from the 1740s there was a silver-lead mine here, on the slopes of Plynlimon. Discover the history of the mining industry that once dominated the area. Pan for silver, or join the underground Miners' Trail. (Tel. 01970 890620)

Rheidol Power Station
Entry to Powergen's Hydro Electric Scheme in the Rheidol Valley is free, and includes entrance to the Visitor Centre with its exhibitions and caf�. You also get the chance to tour the factory and its fish farm, or go on a nature trail. There are also opportunities for scenic drives and trout fishing.
Open 10.30am to 4.15pm, 1st April to 31st October. Tours operate between 11am and 3.30pm. Tel. 01970 880667
