Angel Inn

The Angel Inn

Behind the slightly scary entrance is a long, low-ceilinged bar with a couple of cosy corners. The back bar also has a small dancefloor which can be quite busy later on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Angel has a generally friendly atmosphere and pleasant staff. Apart from the club nights it's mainly popular with locals, particularly a slightly older crowd.

I well remember this pub back in the 80's and it's still got that certain atmosphere. Well done all. I hope to re-visit in the summer

Reading this...yes, Dick the Landlord in the late 70's and early 80's. Played his back bar in various bands and he'd be giving me career advice - usually to give it up.B-). Farmers next door was for politicos meetings and the Talk of the Town was deffo not for outsiders. Happy days.

'Consumer Durables' are not so durable. But memories of magic nights in the Back Bar will last me forever.... about forty years ago now!

the angel is now run by Pete and Jakie, and is host to a wide variety of music events from reggae to d&b. Recent years have seen the decline of venues to host nights in Aber, but the angel has held strong and is responsibale for love, breakups and a whole lot more. Great to see that it has such a chechered history of good times if I could say one thing it would be 'give me my brain cells back!'

If you were an Aber student in the late 1960s you can never forget this place. Gerald with his good humour, Brum accent and splendid moustache was the landlord, fizz-buzz was the first act, guitars, music and improvised singing were the main event. Every night of the week. There were queues to get into the front bar at opening times on Fridays and Saturdays (livers were rested on Sundays). The back room hosted an excellent weekly folk club in mid-week and Saturday nights were a free-for-all. What an amazing place and what amazing memories. How we haven't all died from secondary cancer in that smoke filled front bar is a marvel. Memories survive, and dreams embellish them, but are there any photos out there?

I remember being a student in the mid-late 90s and the Angel was my local. If you sat on a certain local's chair the _____ hit the fan; think she was called Megan or something similar, she sat in the corner on the left as you walked in. Good times. Ben x

Anyone remember Dick the landlord? Remember the tatty guitars? Remember Tank? You could get a pint on the slate and make it last all night, or get hammered out the back, or lurk in the pool room being dodgy. Great hangout for all alternative folks. The 69'rs would come across from Brum and there was never any trouble with the regulars. I remember the Aberocsoc gigs 1980-84, with Dick storming through "put that s**t out". Eventually it turned out that the claim the DS were in the potakabin opposite was true, and a few folk I knew picked up fines! But unforgettable, the best pub in the world in its day.

I have some great but vague memories of this place in the late 80s, stumbling about in various states of conciousness with my mates Ellis & Liz and various other freaks of the day. Always had good tunes and a friendly atmosphere, something that could be hard to find for a wierdo out on a Friday in Aber back then! I'll be back in Aber in a weeks so I might go see what it's like now!

I just remembered that 'The Farmers', which was the pub next door, once put a returnable deposit on all their glasses. This emptied The Angel of a lot of its glassware as soon as word got around. The Farmers was adopted by bikers, some of whom came by bus all the way from Machynlleth (no bikes). The Angel was the hippy pub. In 1972 all the men wore tie-dies and flares, while the women favoured pre-Raphelite print dresses, or flares with smock tops, which are back in fashion now! Happy times

I think the Back Bar has been refurbished since us hairy ones frequented it in the early 1970s. I met my wife to be there and she's still with me. So the Back Bar is my history, right? Albright Lemon Top was 11p and Worthington E was 12p. Horrible keg beer but a lovely atmosphere.
