Promenade

Main Promenade

Stretching for a mile and a half from the harbour and marina in the south to Constitution Hill in the north, the promenade is the focal point of the town. During the day, and on fine summer evenings, many choose to enjoy a leisurely walk along the seafront and 'kick the bar' at the northern end.

Starting at the south, there is a good view of the new marina development around the harbour. Moving further north, the New Promenade continues, winding tightly around the edge of the castle grounds. Near the castle stands St Michael's Church, and the Old College. Built in the 1870s, its failure as a hotel led to it being converted into Wales' first university. Although Aberystwyth University is now mainly based on the hillside Penglais campus, this ornate, Gothic-style building still houses some departments of the University.

Sand all over the road!

Aberystwyth's pier was constructed in 1864 and soon became a popular attraction. Once reaching 900 feet out in to the sea, but now only 300 feet long, the pier houses a pub, nightclub, ice-cream parlour, amusement arcade, snooker club and brasserie. The Heritage Trail website has some further interesting information.

The main promenade has been refurbished in recent years, and includes a children's paddling pool and the Bandstand. During the summer season, the Bandstand becomes a venue for several events with appearances from local bands, performers and choirs.

The beach is mainly shingle and dark sand. Water is safe for bathing, meeting required standards.
